What To Wear For An Outdoor Family Photoshoot In Suffolk
One of the questions I get asked most often before a session is what everyone should wear.
And honestly, it matters less than people think.
The best family photographs are rarely about perfectly coordinated outfits or dressing everyone identically. They’re about connection, movement, personality, and feeling comfortable enough to simply be yourselves.
That’s especially true outdoors.
Woodland family photography in Suffolk works beautifully because it feels relaxed. Children can move naturally, parents aren’t worrying about keeping everything pristine, and the whole experience becomes far less about “posing” and much more about spending time together.
What you wear should support that feeling, not fight against it.
Keep Things Simple
Simple almost always photographs best.
Soft, neutral colours work beautifully outdoors because they allow the focus to stay on people rather than clothing. Earthy greens, creams, warm browns, muted blues and soft textures all sit naturally within the landscape.
I’d generally avoid:
large logos
bright neon colours
strong patterns
heavily branded clothing
anything overly formal that feels uncomfortable
The goal is timelessness.
You want these photographs to still feel beautiful in ten or twenty years’ time, hanging in your home long after trends have changed.
Comfort Matters More Than Perfection
This is especially important for children.
If a child feels uncomfortable, itchy, restricted or overly dressed-up, it usually shows very quickly. The happiest sessions tend to happen when children are free to explore, run, climb, cuddle and play without constantly being corrected.
Some of my favourite photographs happen in the in-between moments:
muddy boots
oversized jumpers
windswept hair
children holding hands
parents laughing because things didn’t go entirely to plan
That’s the good stuff.
That’s usually what families connect with most afterwards too.
Think About Your Home
One thing that’s often overlooked when planning outfits is where the photographs may eventually live.
A framed family photograph becomes part of your home for years to come. Softer, more natural colours tend to sit beautifully within interiors without overwhelming a room.
This is one of the reasons I love printed artwork so much. These photographs aren’t just for a screen for a few days before disappearing into a phone camera roll. They become part of everyday life.
The Suffolk Landscape Does A Lot Of The Work
One of the reasons I love photographing families outdoors across Suffolk is because the landscape already gives us so much texture and atmosphere.
Woodland paths, long grass, evening light, coastal tones, changing seasons — they all help create photographs that feel calm and natural without needing anything overly styled.
You don’t need perfection.
You don’t need children staring at the camera.
And you definitely don’t need matching white shirts and blue jeans.
You just need to arrive ready to spend a little time together outdoors.
That’s usually where the magic happens.
